The Land of Adhumlia
Many eons ago, Adhumlia was a world torn by war. Every race was at war with each other. The fighting had gone on for so long that none could remember what had started it.
Finally, in sheer frustration at the chaos in the world, the gods of each race created a magical item to provide protection and prosperity to their children. This gift was given under the condition that all fighting was to cease immediately. If the gift wasn't big enough of an incentive, the gods each promised their race that they would join together and destroy the world with the same magical items they had forged for its protection if the wars didn't end.
Of course the gift and threat caused an immediate dissolution of all battles, and a great peace fell over the land.
As time went on, many races forgot the original intent of the magical items they possessed. Many even forgot they had originally been gifts from the gods. The kings and nobility of the races instead gave the items new stories to further their pride in themselves.
Naturally, with the stories abandoned, so too was the peace. At first, there were just small little quarrels, but before long, the more aggressive races had fallen into heavier battles and civil wars. Not long after that, the peace among other races slowly dwindled until it was virtually nonexistent. Eventually, this lead to the world being divided up among the races with each race having a very strict border. At present, it is very rare to see someone of a differing race out of their homeland. It's even rarer to see two people of different races traveling together.
Of course, the gods saw this, and with the truce broken, they wanted to follow up on their threat. Unfortunately, they had poured such great power into the magical items that they no longer had the strength to destroy the world without the items. They decided to send messengers down to the world to retrieve them. However, the messengers did not have much success in this.
The races were very reluctant to give up their magical items for any reason. The gods were very near to sending armies down to earth to force the items returned to them, but then it was discovered that the magical items had become lost. This angered the gods even more, that their precious gifts had been misplaced. Their rage caused them to wreak havoc on all the races who had lost their items, especially targeting the royalty and nobility whose resposibility it had been to protect and preserve the items.
Each doomed race now experiences great trials and heartache. They know the loss of their magical items is the cause, but they do not know the gods are behind it. However, they are wise enough to send out adventurers to find the items and return them to their proper places.
The risk of such a quest is high and so is the risk of its success. The world is still at war. The gods still plan to destroy it once they have the magical items. No one knows quite where the missing items have gone to. Maybe it's an evil dictator who's collecting the items, desiring to destroy the world himself. Or maybe it's a good psychic who saw the plot of the gods and stole the items to buy the world more time. Still it could be that the items were simply misplaced in battle or stolen by some thieving rouge. Really, only time will tell.
The more important question is what side are you on. The side destroying the world or the ones saving it? And do you really know that's who you're fighting for?
