First of all, welcome to Land of Adhumlia! We’re excited that you have found us and have decided to take the plunge into this world with us and we look forward to seeing you become a valued member of our community.
Now, starting in a new site, or stepping into literary Role-Play (RP) for the first time, we hope that your experience would be a superb one; to help facilitate that, we have supplied you here with what we hope to be a handy guide to getting started in Land of Adhumlia. So without further gilding the Lilly, and without further ado: Getting Started in Land of Adhumlia.
Rules
As with any site, community or game, there has to be rules. Before joining or if you’ve already joined us, then before writing up a character or really posting on the boards, you should really take the time to read all our Rules. There are several rules falling under various categories from general RP to site conduct. Some of these rules you may be familiar with and some rules are in place due to host user agreements. By signing up/joining us here, you will have already or will agree to the user conduct agreements put forth by freeforums.net. That’s right, those annoying little boxes everyone ignores and just clicks “I agree” actually means that you have read that box of text and agree to abide by it. If any legal matters arise- we hope that they don’t- you can be held responsible for any breach of agreement.
Our apology for the heftiness of the rules speel there, but it is unfortunately sometimes necessary to highlight these important if sometimes boring details. Anyways, let’s move onto the interesting stuff!
About Adhumlia[/u]
Land of Adhumlia was created by The DM. The DM has spent many hours working and organising everything for the site and I’m going to take this opportunity right now to thank the DM for all their hard work in bring us a wonderful little corner of the internet. No, I’m not the DM, I’m another persona using the account to post this up; so before I start confusing you any further, let’s move along.
Land of Adhumlia is a literate RP site based upon Pathfinder- colloquially known as Dungeons and Dragons 3.75. We could go into the differences of the systems and versions but that’s unimportant and would only lead to confusion. What you do need to know is that Land of Adhumlia (LOA) is a literate site. What’s that? Well, it means you write everything down- ideally in a way similar to that which you’d find in a novel. If you’re not familiar with DnD or Pathfinder- don’t worry, you don’t need to know rules or anything like that, you can just treat LOA as a Fantasy RP and you’ll be fine.
If you’re familiar with DnD, you’d associate dice rolling and min-maxing and other round-the-table RP’ing experiences. Here, there is no dice, no paper, no rules-lawyering (save by the DM and staff).
What are you talking about? Some of you might ask. Alright, I’ll give you an example (I like making examples…):
Example 1: Or as I like to call it, frowny-face RP
“I go up to the door and kick it- I roll a 15! Sweet it’s down, I loot the room.”
A common sight around a table RP. Fine in person with some chips and dip, not so much on a literate site.
Example 2: Or the smiley-face RP
“Gor examined the aged wooden door; the blackened edges around its hinges betraying the mildew and rot infecting it’s frame. With a grunt, he hefted his armoured boot, slamming it against the door with a well-practiced movement and a satisfying crack. The door gave way, snapping off it’s hinges and thudding to the floor in a cloud of dust.”
That’s the difference between the table and writing on a literary site.
Now the other oh so important thing you need to know about LOA is the Plot.[/u][/b] This provides important back story to LOA and the conditions of the lands and relationships between the various races- an important thing for when it comes to making your characters.
Speaking of making characters, that leads into our next topic!
Making Characters![/u]
Making a character in LOA at first may seem like a daunting quest, however, once you know what you’re doing, you’ll be breezing through the process in no time at all.
Character Profiles[/u][/b] are in the Character profiles board. Within this board is all the information you need to make a character. Well that was short and simple wasn’t it, moving on…oh alright, I’ll write some more about it.
First thing you’re going to need is the Character Profile Template.[/b][/u] Now I’ll let you wipe your spit-take off the screen; the template may seem big at first but….okay, it’s big- but I assure you, it is very straight forward and those familiar to DnD will breeze through it. If you’re not familiar with DnD and are still gawking at the template- don’t panic! We’ve supplied you with an explanation of the entire template to guide you through it. It’s just below the template.
“What’s with all the numbers?!” I hear you crying. Arlight, you know that thing I said earlier about there being no dice…well, it’s completely true, but…but we have special events here at LOA, these events award extra experience (post count) and gold (cyber feel-good money) and these events are conducted much like a real game of DnD- hence the need for numbers. These events also progress the plot of LOA along.
The numbers are all explained, all you need to do is fill it out. Don’t fret too much, in general RP, these numbers are meaningless, we just need them for when events come about and you wish your character to participate.
There are various things you’ll need to fill out your character profile- all of which you’ll find in the Character Profiles board. These range from Weapons and Equipment and Armour you character has, to Spells and Feats they have.
One thing to note is that all characters begin at level 1 and start with 500 gold. The gold is used to purchase equipment etc that are listed in their appropriate sections in the character profiles board.
“Can I buy magical items?” Yes, if you can afford them- which at 500 gold is unlikely.
“But I want my guy to walk around in full plate 10” thick armour?” Can you do it for 500 gold? No? Well then.
You should be getting the feeling by now that magical items and really really nice stuff isn’t easy to come by. This makes obtaining these items special. VERY special- as they should be! You wanna get the shinies, get into events and other gold gaining events to get the gold to buy that +5 Flame-touched Full Plate.
“What are these events?” Oh, silly me, sorry, here, have a new topic.
Events[/b]
Events[/u][/b] are special times when the plot of LOA is moved along and your characters can become a part of it! You’ll earn twice the amount of post count and gain gold for each post you make. It’s treated much like a DnD game, so the DM will be active and controlling NPC’s and rolling dice etc. It is also the one place where your character can die due to a bad call and some unlucky dice and you get no further say in the matter. MWAHAHAHA!
“That doesn’t’ seem fair.” Anything can happen in a DnD game, what’s the point in reaping rewards if there is no risk? If your character survives, you’ll have the pleasure of been a part of some important events, some tasty experience and gold for your character and probably some bragging rights.
In closing
Well this is all you need to know to get started with us. We hope that you’ve found this helpful and are willing to take the plunge with us here and enjoy some good ole RP.
With that, I shall bid you adieu, and good luck! Looking forward to seeing you in LOA!
